Department of Kalam
About Us
The discipline of Kalam, which deals with the fundamental tenets of Islam, follows a method that balances reason and tradition, assigning value to each according to its place and context. Throughout history, the discipline of Kalam has undertaken the task of establishing the consistency, meaningfulness, and truth of the principles of faith on the one hand, and on the other hand, analyzing and proving the invalidity of criticisms directed at faith. In addition, Kalam, as it has throughout history, aims to present religious beliefs based on definitive evidence and to dispel any doubts that may exist in people's minds regarding these beliefs.
Within the Department of Kalam at our faculty, undergraduate courses in “Fundamentals of Islamic Belief,” “History of Kalam,” and “Systematic Kalam” are taught. The course “Fundamentals of Islamic Belief” teaches the fundamental beliefs of Islam. The course “History of Kalam” examines the historical development of the science of Kalam, the Kalam schools that emerged as a result of the fundamental beliefs, and the religious, political, social, and cultural reasons that led to the emergence of these schools. In the “Systematic Kalam” course, topics such as existence and knowledge, along with the topics of “Divinity,” “Prophethood,” and “Hereafter,” are examined comparatively based on the systems of theological schools.
