Department of History of Philosophy
About Us
The History of Philosophy course is an integral part of the curriculum of Faculties of Theology and Islamic Sciences. Philosophy can be defined as a comprehensive, consistent, and rational evaluation of questions and issues arising in the areas of existence, knowledge, and values. This course covers the history of thought from ancient times to the present day. However, this course is not merely a chronological history lesson. Through this course, our students become acquainted with the currents of thought that have developed from the past to the present in various fields. By learning about the thinkers/philosophers who developed these ideas and the environments that gave rise to these ideas and thinkers, they acquire a certain level of knowledge in this field. This course also serves as preparation for some of the other courses taught in Faculties of Theology. The most important of these are the courses on Islamic Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion. In addition, there are parallels with some topics covered in courses such as Kalām and Sufism. It is impossible to do justice to these courses without knowing the thinkers covered in the History of Philosophy course and the ideas they put forward.
